 | 09:57 pm - I've been contacting a lot of folks in the government about the proposed ban on exotic pets. Here's my opinion. As a responsible owner of sugar gliders and leopard geckos (and a veterinary professional and pre-vet student), I feel this sort of legislation must be stopped. The incidents of escaped pets becoming a truly harmful, invasive species are very few compared to those that have not and could not. For example, bearded dragons are hardly a threat to the environment and agriculture in Oregon.
The excuse that exotics require more care is bogus. The government already does little to ensure the welfare of cats and dogs. Feigning care for the welfare of exotics as an excuse for their ban is ridiculous. Only certain animals (e.g. tigers, some primates) require extremely extensive care that the average person would likely not provide. For these species, permits are usually already in effect. If the government wishes to improve the welfare of pets, they should pass much stiffer penalties for abuse and neglect of ALL species of pets, as well as harsher penalties for owners of species that require permits that have not attained those permits.
On a personal level, I couldn't care less about the effect on the economy that any bans would mean. I care about the fact that I would be in a panic about my babies. I wouldn't know how to prove pre-existing ownership of my leopard geckos or sugar glider. And I would be furious that, years from now, I would never be able to keep ferrets, sugar gliders, hamsters, leopard geckos, etc. ever again.
Please help me. The only press I've heard about this is always talking about owners of exotics like lions and chimpanzees. What about folks like me? Check out my website to see just how well I take care of my pets:
www.muftin.com
I hope that who ever reads this will see how dear these exotic pets are to me.
Thank you,

 | 08:06 pm - happy UN day! the UN is extremely underappreciated. *ahem*
In just the past few years, the United Nations and UN agencies have:
* Vaccinated more than 500 million children since 2000, reducing measles deaths by 68%;
* Provided food, shelter, medical aid, and education to more than 25 million people in 2007 alone—the highest yearly total ever;
* Organized the first ever democratic elections in Afghanistan, as well as the first in decades in Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo;
* Created more than 50 sustainable energy enterprises in developing countries, serving more than 300,000 people; and
* Deployed over 130,000 troops and personnel to 19 political and peacekeeping missions.

 | 07:31 pm - election happy election blurb, from an article from the bbc:
"...Mr Obama's visit to his grandmother comes as two leading Republicans announced they had chosen to endorse him rather than their party's own candidate.
Former Bush White House press secretary Scott McClellan and former Republican Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson threw their weight behind Mr Obama.
The news, only days after former Secretary of State Colin Powell gave his endorsement to the Democratic candidate, may dent Mr McCain's efforts to seize back the initiative, correspondents say.
Mr Obama also received an endorsement from the New York Times."

 | 11:27 pm - please!!! October 14 is the last day to register to vote before the election in Oregon. it is different in every state/area, and some states' dates have already passed! do it.
i am also copying & pasting some information i got from a friend:
Hey everyone...I've been trying to excercise restraint with my bulletin-posting during this highly political season, but voter registration deadlines are fast approaching. I'm sure that if you are awesome enough to be my friend, you are awesome enough to have already registered, BUT there have been a lot of issues over the past few years with registered voters being purged, and I want to make very sure that that does not happen to me or any of my friends!
There is a nonpartisan website that allows you to check to see if you are registered, the status of your registration, and verify that the information on your registration is still accurate:
http://www. canivote. org (you can also go here to find out the last possible day to register to vote for this election for your state/area.)
It takes 2 seconds to do (probably less time than you've already spent if you've read this far), and will most likely just give you peace of mind, and verify that it's all good and your registration is active and accurate. But if it's not, there's still enough time to fix any problems...but BARELY, so you'd better get on it!
And of course if you aren't registered...get moving! There is SO much at stake right now between the economy, the war, global warming, healthcare--pick just about any issue! Please, let your opinion be a part of the decision this November! Regardless of party affiliation, it is our civic duty and privelege in this democratic republic to engage in the political process by educating ourselves on the candates and issues and making an informed vote.
That is all. *Steps down from soap box.* Current Mood: tired

 | 01:32 am - becca i just realized that, in all the recent crud, i forgot to mention that i finally got my memorial tattoo for becca. it's based on a doodle she drew in one of her notebooks. it's an axolotl on my upper right thigh. i'll upload some pics in a sec. though please keep in mind that it's stil irritated and settling in.
i got it on september 5th (the day before i got fired) at optic nerve arts. the tattoo artist was tim jordan. i went to check out ONA first, to check out the artists' portfolios. tracy faraca owns the shop (at least partly), and she has been a long-time friend, though i haven't seen her since bfore becca died. all of us used to go to black hole when it was still hers to get a lot of our piercing work done. her late husband, nate, was the artist i had wanted to do my first tattoo. when he died i stopped thinking about work i wanted done for a while. becca's death was an unfortunate catalyst, to make a fucking understatement. i got very lucky that i found a piece in tim's portfolio (of a rat, and becca loved rats), that made me feel he was the right artist for this. and i was right. becca's sketch, and my modifications, plus his artistic input, all came together.
